WhatsApp Business app vs. WhatsApp Business Platform: which one do shops need?

Shop owners setting up WhatsApp marketing meet two names that sound almost the same: WhatsApp Business app and WhatsApp Business Platform (sometimes "API" or "Cloud API"). They are different tools, for different jobs. Most shops will want both.

WhatsApp Business app

The app you install from the App Store / Play Store. It is a phone app, with a shop profile, catalog, quick replies, labels, and calling.

  • Best for: daily one-to-one chats — answering questions, confirming orders, voice notes, calls.
  • Limited for: bulk marketing. The app's built-in broadcast caps out quickly, offers no approved-message review, no opt-in record per contact, and no per-person delivered/read tracking.
  • Number: one phone number, on one phone.

WhatsApp Business Platform

The software interface behind the app that Meta offers to Tech Providers and businesses. Qelo Connect is built on it. It lets software send approved messages to an opted-in list, track what happened to each one, and collect replies in an inbox outside the phone.

  • Best for: marketing that reaches the whole list at once — new in, back in stock, weekend offers — with auditable opt-in and STOP handling.
  • Limited for: replacing the phone. The Platform has no phone UI; you answer replies from software (like Qelo Connect's inbox on your laptop) rather than the handset — unless you set up coexistence.
  • Number: a WhatsApp Business number registered to your WhatsApp Business Account, billed by Meta per message.

The old choice — and what changed

Question Before coexistence With coexistence (now)
Can I use my current shop number for bulk sends? No — moving it to the Platform unregistered it from the app. Yes — the same number runs in the app and on the Platform simultaneously.
Where do I answer daily chats? Wherever the number lives — phone or software, not both. Phone for daily chats, laptop inbox for bulk replies — both see the same number.
What do customers see? Whoever held the number. One name, one number, one thread. They cannot tell which surface sent it.

Which does a South African shop need?

App alone is enough if you only do personal follow-ups — "Your order is ready, Thandi" — to a handful of people, and you chase each chat by hand.

Platform via Qelo Connect is for the weekly sit-down: one approved message, one send, delivered to every opted-in regular at a rate WhatsApp accepts, with pause/resume and per-person status. That is the job the app was never built for and that Qelo handles from your laptop.

Both, via coexistence, is the sweet spot for most shops: keep the number customers already know, keep answering in the app when you are on the floor, add bulk approved messages from Qelo Connect without giving up the phone.

Cost note

App: free. Platform message charges: billed by Meta to your WhatsApp Business account, by marketing/utility category and destination country (pricing). Qelo Connect software is billed separately by Qelo — we talk it through with you at support@qelo.co.za.

Bottom line

You are not choosing between an app and an API. You are choosing whether the shop's WhatsApp number can both chat and market — and whether the marketing has opt-in, approvals and proof it landed. With coexistence, the answer can be both on one number.
