WhatsApp coexistence explained: keep your number and send bulk messages
Until recently, a WhatsApp Business number could live in one place: either the WhatsApp Business app on your phone, or the WhatsApp Business Platform (the API your software uses for bulk, approved messages). Not both. If you wanted bulk sending, you moved the number off the app entirely.
Coexistence changes that. Meta now lets the same number run in both places at once.
What coexistence actually is
- App keeps doing what it already does: voice, calls, everyday chats, your business profile and catalog. You pick up the phone and reply the way you always have.
- Platform (via a provider like Qelo Connect) sends approved messages — the marketing messages Meta reviews before they can go out — to your opted-in list, paced at a rate WhatsApp accepts, with delivered → read → reply tracking.
- Customers save one number and see one name. Replies thread together regardless of whether they were triggered by a bulk send or an everyday chat.
In Meta's words, the number "coexists" in the app and on the Platform. No more choosing.
Who should use it
Keep your existing number with coexistence if customers already have it saved — on your shopfront, packaging, Google Business profile, or in their contact lists. You avoid a "we have a new number" blast that costs trust and misses people.
Get a new dedicated number if you are starting fresh, or you want shop and personal chats cleanly apart. A fresh number also avoids any existing app chat history mixing into the new inbox.
Either way, the messages you send via Qelo Connect look identical: your business name, your approved message, your button.
How you connect
Qelo Connect uses Meta's Embedded Signup — the same consent flow Meta shows to every Platform business — launched from inside Qelo Connect in your browser:
- In Qelo Connect, open WhatsApp numbers → Connect. A Meta pop-up appears.
- Log into Facebook, pick your Business, and choose the number: a new one, or your existing WhatsApp Business app number.
- Confirm. Meta verifies the number and hands Qelo Connect an access token scoped to your WhatsApp Business Account. Qelo stores it encrypted.
No CSV export from Meta, no manual token pasting, no webhook URL to configure — as a Meta Tech Provider, Qelo's single webhook is already the one Meta calls for your account's delivery receipts and replies.
What changes — and what doesn't
| Stays in the app | Comes from the Platform (Qelo Connect) |
|---|---|
| Daily one-to-one chats, calls, voice notes | Bulk approved messages to an opted-in list |
| Business profile you edit on the phone | Message library and campaign audience builder on your laptop |
| Catalog and quick replies | Paced sending, pause/resume, per-person status |
You keep answering in the app. Qelo Connect also shows replies in a threaded inbox on your laptop — new-since-you-last-looked, per person — so the Saturday rush and the Monday bulk send live together.
Opt-in and STOP still rule
Coexistence does not relax WhatsApp's consent model. Qelo Connect only sends to contacts marked opted in, with how and when they said yes stored per person. Anyone who replies STOP is marked opted out and excluded from every future campaign. The same record that makes bulk sending responsible is what keeps the number in good standing with Meta.
Next steps
- Read Meta's coexistence documentation for the platform view.
- Inside Qelo Connect, the first run checklist walks you through connecting a number and adding a payment method for Meta's message charges.
- Talk to us at support@qelo.co.za if you want to check whether your current number qualifies — most active WhatsApp Business app numbers do.
Qelo Connect is built by a Meta Tech Provider on the WhatsApp Business Platform. Message charges are billed by Meta to your own WhatsApp Business account; Qelo does not add to them.
